Timothy “TJ” Norris Jr. is an award-winning jazz trombonist and bassist. TJ realized his love for performing music while attending Lavilla Middle School in Jacksonville, Florida. In high school, TJ found himself intensely studying the compositions of Duke Ellington, that eventually culminated in a performance of Ellington’s music as part of the Essentially Ellington Festival hosted in Fredrick P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center. This experience ignited TJ’s ambition to truly pursue a life in music.
TJ currently holds a B.S. in Jazz Studies from Florida A&M University and a Master’s of Music from Florida State University. TJ has since been under the tutelage of Nick Finzer, Paul Mckee, and Robert Griffin. In 2014, he was selected as the 2nd trombonist for the Disneyland All-American College Band. TJ has collaborated with such leading artist as John Clayton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jiggs Whigham, Scotty Barnhart, Marcus Printup, Kirk Franklin, George Clinton, and many others.
Along with his performance pedigree, TJ has also worked with students from multiple universities, middle and high schools, and community ensembles. He has served on the faculty of the Florida State College of Music Summer Jazz Camp and Florida A&M University Band Camp. TJ maintains an active teaching and performing schedule both as a freelance artist and as a vital member of the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
TJ Norris can be heard on many different recordings with a plethora of artists from many different genres including: Delfeayo Marsalis (Make America Great Again! 2016) Bailey Hinton, Darius Jackson, and more. TJ seeks to begin recording his own independent work in the near future and plans to include collaborations with many musical colleagues, musicians, and friends.
