Why did you choose your instrument, and what was it like playing it for the first time?

A couple of years ago, we had an assembly at school where they were showing us all these different instruments. When they showcased the saxophone, I knew at that moment that I wanted to play that instrument. I had seen it played so many times and had always liked how it sounded, and now I had the opportunity to play it.

I really enjoyed playing the saxophone for the first time. I had played the recorder before and I had never really liked it, but with the saxophone it felt different, so I knew I was going to enjoy playing it.

Who have been your musical inspirations?

I think my biggest musical inspiration was my elementary school band teacher. He was the one who taught me how to play saxophone and he helped me discover my love for the saxophone.

Band directors are the best! So how often do you practice and what keeps you motivated?

I practice multiple times a week and I find it enjoyable to play saxophone for 15-30 minutes. I just want to get better and improve my skills. There are always things that I can improve on and I want to be the best that I can be.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced so far in your musical journey?

I think my biggest challenge was at the beginning. I was learning to play a new instrument, so at the beginning, seeing that I wasn’t playing very difficult music was a little disincentivizing. As I got better and started playing more difficult music, I was able to appreciate my improvement.

Other than that, I would say the weight of my saxophone and the amount of time it takes me to assemble it can be annoying. Otherwise, I really enjoy the saxophone!

Do you have any favorite musical memories so far?

My favorite musical memory was when we were taking band classes virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were given a group project where we were given a song to play and we were able to add whatever parts and instruments we wanted to. It was enjoyable because we were able to make it our own.

What other musical things do you hope to do when you’re older?

I hope to keep playing the saxophoneas well as piano, and play at open mics, jazz bands and concerts.

You're off to a great start! What do you like to do outside of music?

My other main interest outside of music is soccer. I LOVE soccer!
